Last week the evangelist Matthew offered a detailed description of Jesus' baptism, complete with the heavens opening, the Spirit descending and resting on Jesus, and a voice proclaiming, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." This week, in the Gospel accordi...

Thus says God: “I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you.” In the Name of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Aha! Eureka! By George, I think I’ve got it! These phrases would seem appropriate as we begin the season of Epiphany. At least, that is the common definition, being struck with some great realization. The cartoon light bulb appears over one’s head. We utter these phrases when we have figured something out....

The first Sunday after Christmas Day. Jesus is tucked away in the manger. The shepherds have returned to their flocks rejoicing. Mary is holding all their word in her heart. The wise men are on their way bearing gifts. Mary has probably sent Joseph out...

“The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory.”

In the Name of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

“Just wait until your father gets home.” This is the phrase heard in some households when a child has been naughty. Perhaps mom is the more strict disciplinarian. Adjust accordingly, though I’m not sure how effective this phrase is in changing bad behavior. Perhaps it gives the guilty party a little time to think about their misdeeds....

Last Sunday, John the Baptist arrived on the scene, larger than life, to herald the beginning of Jesus' adult ministry. He preached repentance, he urged preparedness, and he called out the religious elite ... "You brood of vipers!" John beamed with confidence in his mission and his message. By this morning’s gospel, the religious leaders...

“In those days, John the Baptist appeared ...”, as if all of a sudden. God’s saving work rarely happens all of a sudden. Since creation God has been calling humanity to be reconciled with the Divine. John’s beginnings were no less abrupt. John’s bir...

Today marks the beginning of a new Church year with the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a liminal time, an in-between time, a time of watching, waiting, and anticipation. Advent is also an active time. If the penitential season of Lent is a time for the Spring cleaning of our...

Today is the last day of the liturgical year, and it culminates with Christ as King. We have all sorts of images and experiences of kings. Throughout history, the reign of worldly kings have been a mixed bag. Some have been good, benevolent rulers, while others have been merciless, power hungry ty...
